30 Day Organization Challenge (Day 3): Kitchen Cabinets

Today we continue our organization challenge in the kitchen. We will probably end up hanging out in the kitchen for a few more days. Between food, spices, Tupperware and random kitchen gadgets, our kitchens tend to hold on to clutter.

Since I started with my fridge/freezer, I want to go ahead and work my way around my kitchen. My next three cupboards are cookbooks, medicine cabinet, and spices. For some of you, these three may take longer than 30 minutes, but I am going to try and get them all done today. Let’s get started!

Day 3 Organization Challenge: Cookbooks

I store all of my cookbooks in the cabinet on top of my fridge, so I am going to start there. Let’s start by taking everything out. Just like with the fridge and freezer cleanout, I like to wipe the cabinet down before I start organizing everything. I love clean cabinets, so I will go head and wipe down the inside and the outside as I go along.

I know cookbooks are kind of a thing of the past, but a lot of people I know, still use them. I have a handful of them, but I like to evaluate them yearly, to see what I still use. If you are still a cookbook reader, go through them. If not, let’s move on to the next section: the medicine cabinet.

Medicine Cabinet Organization

This next step in the organization challenge, is one I have to revisit often. The medicine cabinet. My husband has been in the army for 25 years and they LOVE prescribing pills. I love researching supplements and natural remedies. Between the two of us, this cabinet has a tendency to fill up from time to time.

Per usual, I take everything out and wipe down the inside and outside of the cabinet. I throw away anything expired, old prescriptions, and anything we just don’t use anymore. I used to hold onto supplements, “just in case” but I don’t do that anymore. If I try something and I don’t like it, it gets tossed. I keep vitamin if they aren’t expired.

Put everything back once you’ve gone through it all. I see a lot of bloggers using cute little bins for their medicine cabinets, but I have never found a system that I love. I just try to stick with keeping the things we use the most on the bottom shelf 🙂 Sometimes organization is all about keeping it simple for your family.

Spice Cabinet

Last section for today’s organization challenge, the spice cabinet. We love our spices! My oldest loves to cook and is constantly buying new spices to try. It had been a little while since I went through my spices. I only got rid of expired spices and one that was rock solid. Moisture must’ve gotten inside the bottle. But I did notice a few duplicates. Guess we should get in here and clean this one out more often.

  • Take everything out.
  • Clean the inside and outside of the cabinet.
  • Pitch expired or moisture ridden spices, as well as spices you no longer use.
  • Put it all back!

I have this fabulous little shelf I put my spices on. I will add a link below. I love being able to see all of my spices at once.
