Modern Farmhouse Design: How to Achieve this Classic Style

Modern farmhouse design is a newer take on a style that’s been around since the 1800’s. Its simplistic nature was originally born out of necessity, but in recent years gained popularity as minimalism grew. The queen of modern farmhouse, Joanna Gaines, came on the scene in 2013 and the popularity of this style exploded! While some argue that it is on its way out, I feel there will always be a place for this cozy, comfy, minimalist, classic style. Here are five ways to incorporate this classic style into your home.

Start with a neutral color palette

Whether it’s cool or warm colors, the modern farmhouse look starts with a neutral palette. While white is commonly used, layering creams, beige, and greys also works well. Once your foundation is laid, adding in pops of color give farmhouse its modern feel. Black is often a great color choice for adding contrast as are some blues, greens and charcoal.

Incorporate Natural Materials

The modern farmhouse look is known for using organic and raw materials. Salvaged woods, industrial metals and masonry are all welcome in this style. You can mix industrial piping with raw wood, and weathered materials with sleek modern cement finishes. Include natural fabrics and textiles like cotton, canvas, burlap, and jute. Keep materials as natural as possible, regardless of their age.

Mix Old and New

Mixing old with new is a key component to modern farmhouse decor and an easy way to add your own personal touch to your home. You can keep your grandma’s buffet and give it a new purpose as your television stand. You can always add a coat of paint to give an older piece new life. Don’t be afraid to pair vintage pieces with new finds.

Add Minimal Accessories

Excessive decor does not have a place in modern farmhouse design. As with Scandinavian design, minimal, clean lines is the goal. Scour the aisles of any home decor store these days, and you will see a plethora of beautiful, farmhouse pieces. Pick one or two of your favorites so you don’t crowd your space. Look for unique pieces that can make a bold statement and provide both function and art.

Embrace Comfort

The goal of modern farmhouse decor is to be warm and welcoming. Every room should invite your family and friends to stay and get comfortable. Seating should be comfortable, not just pretty. Add warm lighting and soft textiles to complete any area.
