Hexagon Shelf: Easy, Step-by-Step Instructions
My latest DIY wood build was super easy, and I LOVE it! I’ve seen these hexagon shelves floating around and decided to give building one a go. If you have a couple tools lying around, this is a great beginner build.
Hexagon Shelf Materials:
- 1x4x8 Pine Wood
- Painters Tape
- Wood Glue
- Nail Gun
- Wood Putty
- Orbital Sander
- Rust-Oleum Stain in American Walnut & Barrel Brown
- Polyacrylic
First, I cut six 8-inch pieces of pinewood, and then I cut a 30-degree angle on each end. Make sure each angled cut is facing the same way.
*I think it might have been easier to just cut the 30-degree angle, at the 8-inch length, but I wasn’t thinking that through when I started. Lesson learned
Next, I lined up all six pieces, cut side up, and applied wood glue.
Once glue has been applied, you will bring up the open edges, connecting each corner as you go. When you close the final gap, add two addition pieces of tape to hold the hexagon shelf together.
As the glue is drying, get out your nail gun and insert two nails into each side. Once the glue has dried, remove tape and fill holes with wood putty.
Allow wood putty to dry and then sand the entire piece.
Once the entire piece is sanded, apply pre-stain. Let sit for 5 minutes.
Add two coats of Rust-Oleum American Walnut, drying for an hour between each coat.
Apply one coat of Rust-Oleum Barrel Brown. Let dry for an hour.
Apply one coat of polyacrylic. You can add more if you prefer, lightly sanding between each coat. I tend to only add one layer when there won’t be a lot of wear on the piece of furniture.
That’s all! I used two nails to hang the shelf. I plan on going back and adjusting how it’s hung, but for now this works well. Add whatever decor you want and enjoy your beautiful handiwork. Let me know if you build one, or two 🙂
