Toiletries (Day 11): 30 Day Organization Challenge

Today we tackle the toiletries. My husband is always baffled by the number of toiletry items my teenage daughter and I have. I have items stored under the sink, in an Ikea bin, and still manage to take up more counter space than he does. I really did have more toiletries than I was using regularly, so the goal was to change that today.

When going through your toiletries, make sure you go through all of them. The one’s in your bathroom, in your kid’s bathroom(s), in the shower. They tend to build up in all the places.

As always, I pull everything out of my cupboards, and clean them before I put my items back. But today, I also cleaned off the sink, and went ahead and cleaned the mirror as well.

Here are the steps I took, as I decluttered my bathroom:

  • Gather all toiletries in one location.
  • Throw away any expired or old items.
  • Throw away any item you just don’t like. It’s okay, let it go.
  • Throw away any broken bottles.
  • Donate any unopen bottles that you won’t use.

I forgot to take a picture of the toiletries in my kid’s bathroom, but we threw away a lot today. It feels really good to have a clean, clutter free bathroom again!

Having moved to thirteen different houses in the last 20 years, I have had a lot of different bathrooms with all kinds of storage, or lack of storage, options. I have had beautiful bathrooms with more storage space than I could possibly fill! And recently, we lived in a European home with no closets, no storage space in the bathroom, and one bathroom for all four of us. It actually wasn’t so bad.

As a result of all of these moves, I have learned a few organization tricks for my toiletries, and figured I would share. If you are lacking on space, one of my favorite tricks is to use over the door storage. Unless you have your towel hooks on the back of your door, this is a great way to use vertical space.

Over the toilet storage is another option. This is probably one of my least favorite ways to store bathroom items. I don’t know if I have hit my head on one too many or what. But it is an effective use of space and one I have used many, many times.

And then of course, I am always a fan of bins and drawers and all the pretty, clear storage, to keep all my stuff in its own space.

That’s it for today! Thanks for joining me on this declutter/organization challenge. If you’re new here, thanks for stopping by! Make sure you check out the rest of the challenge and feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. I’d love to hear from you 🙂
