Scandinavian Design: Your Guide to this Simple, Elegant Style
I fell in love with Scandinavian Design while living in Europe. I have always loved clean lines and minimal decor, so it was easy to love. Incorporating Scandinavian design includes the following elements:
1. Embrace a neutral color palette.
2. Less is more.
3. Bring nature indoors.
4. Lighting is key.
5. Layered textiles.
Embrace a neutral color palette.
Scandinavian decor is all about a neutral color palette. Start with white walls and light wood flooring to brighten up the space. If you’re looking for ways to add more color, stick to beige, creams and light grey to add some dimension.
Less is more.
Think minimalist decor. An item must not only be visually appealing, it needs to serve a purpose. Look for pieces that can serve a dual purpose. Think function and beauty. The goal here is clean lines and a clutter free space
Bring nature indoors.
With a neutral palette and a focus on minimalism, using natural elements will add warmth and depth to your space. You can do this by adding greenery, real or faux, and using natural elements like wood and cement in your furniture and decor. Other materials to incorporate include rattan, wicker, copper and brass.
Lighting is key.
Scandinavian design is heavily focused on lighting. From bright walls, to light flooring, and open windows, the goal is to bring as much natural light into the space as possible. Scandinavian countries see very little natural lighting in winter months and incorporate other lighting sources to make up for it. Add additional warm lighting to your space with lamps and candles and be sure to limit window treatments to allow for natural lighting whenever possible.
Layered textiles.
Embrace hygge. Keeping in mind the goal of minimal decor and clean lines, think about ways to make your space feel warm and cozy with textiles. Add blankets on couches, beds, and places you can curl up and read a book.
